2021.10.18 10:00 PlentyReplacement402 How should atheists deal with the real life impacts of grief?
Anecdote: My grandmother who was the most atheist person I knew growing up. She died a few years ago. She was cremated (because it was cheap and efficient). My mom and her siblings didn’t really know how to grieve her because she never really indulged in grief herself. She was a wonderful, friendly, kind woman who spent all her time working for her kids and carefully setting aside finances for them the best she could. She took care of me and my sister when we were kids and I have deeply fond memories of her. But when it came to death, she just delved into her work rather than indulge even a day of mourning as happened when her husband died when my mom and her siblings were all kids.
There was no community catharsis when she died because there was was no collective community she ascribed to, save maybe for her neighborhood she liv s in for 50 years. Even then, there wasn’t really any responsible entity to lead her family and the community through that pain like a church leader might, because it would have come off as presumptuous.
Atheists often throw around the rationalization that “when you’re dead, you’re dead”… which may be true, but it’s also smug as shit and really isn’t sufficient for the real ways grief manifests itself.
It seems to me that religion spends a lot of time examining and attempting to develop useful copes for common human experiences that require empathetic guidance to work through. Furthermore, religion can provide time and space to reinforce community bonds by dispersing the pain of grief to more than just the immediate family. It feels like many religions and cultures over many periods of time perform group grief rituals, so while this practice of death rituals extend beyond religion, religion is often an important vehicle to invoke these practices. Growing up in a fairly secular household, vehicle for discussing death inspires a lot of jealousy for me.
So beyond rationalization, what rituals and catharsis could atheists provide for grief? How should a secular group provide empathetic expression for the very real and tangible pain grief causes family, friends, and collectives?
